About Us

The storey of how we were formed is an enchanting storey, some would call it a fairy tale, but us originals refer to it as “The Blessing”…

It started in the summer of 07, when a team of students where strategically placed together to play a attend the Gold Coast Uni Games. With different sports as their forte, the team wanted to all play something other than the usual, something thrilling, something different, something social and something that no matter what injury you had, you could partake at a cruisy level!

As the team formed, the sport was chosen – lawn bowls. Why you ask? Because what other sport in the world can you lazily wonder around on grass barefooted, at the slowest pace possible, barely moving to play, talk trash to your team and the opposition, drink beer whilst you roll a bowl and chill out under the glorious Australian sun all day long…Exactly our point!

So the team, appropriately named the “Grass Cutters” was formed under the ECU Sports banner and made the journey to the big banana – Gold Coast. As the Grass Cutters descended upon the greens and night clubs as ECU’s freshest party essentials – showing 100+ ECU students how to “live the ultimate uni games week” in September 2007, home base was none other than the Q1 – Australia’s tallest most premier high rise 5 star apartments.

After coming home with a bronze medal, a couple of disuses and needing liver transplants, the team decided that this was a sport that had potential… So it began…

ECU Mt Lawley was built in a prime location, not because of its proximity to the city or Leaderville, because it has its own bowls club next door, so close that the music from the club every Thursday keeps the international student housing students awake!

The Sports Association of Australia (SAA) welcomed the team with opened arms and come March 2008, the ECU Lawn Bowls Club was born.

Thursday nights was the come for a lazy roll and beer under the stars accompanied by great tunes and awesome company. We decided to what better way than assist the students of this awesome uni, than to break the old image of “boring” that ECU was nick named with and start to show exactly how we party – HARD!

Its now gorwn to a club that has over 70 members and throws party’s 4 times a year with well over 400 students attending each one! So don’t be shy, help us take the reins and make ECU Lawn Bowls Club the best social/sports club it can possibly be - “Get On Board”!
